Introduction

Welcome to the English Department’s website.

The English Department is a forward-looking and hardworking department, which takes pride on its high profile in the school and its success.

Currently, there are fourteen teachers, one NET and one teaching assistant in our department. All of us love the language and want to share our enthusiasm with students. We are highly committed, and work hard to create opportunities for our students to shine both inside and outside the classroom.
 

Goals and Dreams

To enhance students’ responsibility for learning by building up a good classroom routine and establishing good self-directed learning habits (preview, revision and homework)

To strengthen learning effectiveness by refining both junior and senior form curriculum, devising graded learning and assessment materials to cater for learning diverse needs, offering remedial and enhancement classes to prepare for TSA and DSE, keeping abreast of the trend of TSA and DSE marking schemes and share with students and teachers and boosting students’ presentation skills.

To enrich learning atmosphere by enhancing students’ exposure to English through the regular activities of English corner, encouraging students to participate in internal and inter-school English activities and competitions, setting up an extensive reading habit by launching the on-line reading program and reading award schemes.

To develop teachers’ professionalism by attending seminars, workshops, courses for professional training, joining university projects and carry out schools cross-site visitations delivering professional sharing in panel meetings.

Team work and caring

In China Holiness Church Living Spirit College, teachers share their experiences in motivating students with one another. Teachers also work as a team to encourage students to complete their English Builder lessons. The school policy of keeping a student assignment record helps teachers monitor students’ progress.

Objectives to achieve in junior forms:

  1. To introduce different text types and basic reading skills.
  2. To introduce and consolidate various types of writing formats.
  3. To introduce students’ English foundation on the four skills and get them familiar with the TSA format.
  4. To provide students with a list of thematic vocabulary and a spiral model of learning vocabulary.
  5. To equip students with different listening skills to accomplish listening task.
  6. To build up students’ confidence to speak individually through recordings and TSA practice.
  7. To encourage students to read more extensively by reading different articles and novels.

Objectives to achieve in senior forms:

  1. To consolidate students’ English foundation on the four skills and get them familiar with the DSE format.
  2. To revise and consolidate different reading skills and question formats and listening practices.
  3. To introduce and revise different test types, reading skills and question format.
  4. To introduce and revise writing format and language styles of different types of Letters.
  5. To provide students with a list of thematic vocabulary and a spiral model of learning vocabulary for writing and listening.
  6. To equip students with different listening skills to accomplish listening and integrated tasks by assigning more practices.
  7. To help students to comprehend the reading materials for speaking examination and build up students’ confidence to speak individually and in group through practice of oral and SBA practice.
  8. To encourage students to read more extensively by reading novels, fictions and newspapers.
  9. To provide students with adequate speaking skills and practice during lessons and after school to enhance their oral and SBA performance.

On-line Reading Program (junior Form)— Razkids  

Razkids is the online program for junior students to enjoy  reading and develop good reading habit. Razkids provides various topics and reading levels passages for catering different students with individual reading levels. English team designs a reading scheme for them to reading a certain amount of books. To help students reading books regularly, all junior students have classroom activity reports and reading targets. Students who achieve monthly reading targets will be given a prize.

The English corner is room 207 in school which provides the different activities or lessons to students.

The English corner is focusing on reading and speaking activities. Lesson time usage must be unique, better suited/equipped than regular classrooms. Lunch time & after school have new video watching & discussion activity.

2014 – 2015

This year, LSC students participated in various English-related workshops and competitions. Students gained precious experience and built up self-confidence through all these activities.

 1. 66th Hong Kong Schools Speech Festival – Sole Verse Speaking (Secondary 5- Girls)
5A Lee Yan Yi – 2nd runner-up

 

2. The HKFYG Standard Chartered Hong Kong English Public Speaking Contest

4A Pow Yuk Yee, 5A Chow Tsz Yin, Ally, 5A Lee Yan Yi, 5C Ngan Chak Him and 5C Wong Tsz Yan Gabriel joined the HKFYG Standard Chartered Hong Kong English Public Speaking Contest in January 2015. Gabriel is the top ten in session and awarded Certificate of Good Performance.

3. The Sir T.L. Yang English Language Ambassadors Outreach -SPEAKSY Workshop

Seven S4 and S5 students joined this workshop in May 2015 to improve their public speaking skills. Through participating in the sharing session by experienced public speakers and the public speaking competition, students got practical training for oral English Public Speaking.

Guangzhou & Shenzhen Cultural Visit 2015

After staying in school for a week,  teachers and students  of Wycliffe Christian School  visited  Guangzhou and Shenzhen  for 3 days with LSC buddies.  Everyone had a great time and a better understanding of Chinese  Culture. 

 

 

English Fun Days and Wycliffe Christian School Cultural Exchange 2015

The most fun-filled and exciting annual English Fun Days were held from 24-27 March. A range of activities including games stalls, English Café and song dedication were held throughout the week. Students were encouraged to actively participate in it and chat more with our English Ambassadors in English. It provides a precious chance for our students to practice their spoken English.

And we are so delighted and grateful to have teachers and students  of Wycliffe Christian School visiting us during this week. Thanks for their active participation and generous sharing, our students have a great opportunity to speak English in  authentic environment. First English Activity Day in 2015 


 

 

Visit to International School Fair

 On Nov, 2014, Samuel Lo, Jeff Ho, Ali Cheung, Yannes Lee in S.1B and Carrie Chan in S.1D joined Clearwater Bay School Fair in the afternoon. The aim of this outing is to experience an English-speaking environment. Since they are the special guests of the fair, they were invited to meet the CWBS principal (the one with a cape). They are also given 10 fair tokens, 1 hotdog voucher and 1 soft drink voucher for free.

Wycliffe’s visit 2011

This April, LSC was filled with laughter and cheer. It is because seventeen Australian students, together with four teachers from Wycliffe Christian School came to our school for 6-day school visit.

During these six days, Wycliffe’s students did a number of class visits being introduced Hong Kong local culture and also joined us on our English Fun Day.

This cultural exchange program undoubtedly gives our students a better understanding of Australian custom and help enhances their proficiency in English.

20-9-2010 Drama Performance 

Students enjoyed a live drama performance called 100 Movies in 1 Hour on 20-9-2010. Being exposed to 100 films from a wide variety of genres, such as adventure, comedy and horror, students learnt the vocabulary of film and understood how the English language works in movies from this one-hour English-language drama.

29-05-2010 Prize Presentation Ceremony of Hong Kong Budding Poets

4A Lee Tsz Shan has been selected for the Poet of the school in Hong Kong Budding Poets (English) Award organized by Gifted Education Section, Curriculum Development Institute, Education Bureau. She was invited to the prize presentation ceremony with her mother on 29th May, 2010(Sat).

English Fun Days 13th – 15th April 2010

Wycliffe visiting 2010

Eight students and five teaching staff, including the principal of Australia Wycliffe Christian School came to our school for a five-day school visit from 13th to 16th and 20th April, 2010. The visit provided our students with a golden opportunity to practise their English with foreign students and make friends with people from the other side of the world.

Wycliffe students had made several class visits during those four days and they were keen to share the Australian local culture with our students. In return, our students also did a wide range of presentations for them such as Chinese traditional culture, most famous local tourist spots and Hong Kong delicacies.

Students of our school did agree that the visit helped them a lot to enhance their English proficiency and furnished them with a more authentic English learning environment.

Visit from US Consulate

Mr. Damon Anderson, the Regional English Language Officer from US Consulate visited our school on 19th October, 2009. He greeted all of our students in the morning assembly and then delivered two talks about American Festivals for them. Students were fully engaged and asked questions actively. The visit ended with a mini-buffet lunch. S.6 student reporters joined and interviewed Mr. Anderson, hoping to know more about American culture. In short, it is a very fruitful and meaningful activity, in which our students elicited more opportunities to practise their English listening and speaking skills.

Australia Exchange Tour 2009

Sixteen students and two teachers form our school joined an Australia Exchange program with China Holiness College during this summer holiday form 5th August to 15th August 2009.

Students had a golden opportunity to study in Wycliffe Christian School in Blue Mountain and explored the Australian local culture during the 10- day tour.

Besides the moment of fun and joy in school and local family, students also visited most of the landmarks in Sydney including Harbor Bridge, Opera House and Darling harbor. Both of the students and teachers agreed the tour to Australia did enhance their English proficiency and enrich their understanding of Western culture.

2008 US Elections


S2 Inter-class Group Presentation Competition

Students researched different tourist attractions in Hong Kong. They combined what they have learned during the lessons and the information they found on the Internet and different other sources to produce powerpoint slides. They gave verbal presentations with the powerpoint slides in class and on stage in the Inter-class Competition. The competition was held on 4th April, 2006. The US Consul, Mr Shawn Baxter, from the US Consulate General in Hong Kong was invited to be our honorable adjudicator and give them comments. Most of the students’ work and presentations are good. The task is an integration of students’ reading, writing, speaking, listening, cooperation and IT skills.
